The Union Carriage Works is an historic late Victorian warehouse in Guildhall Street, Preston, being refurbished and converted into wonderful new homes by Etc Urban Developments.

Most of the spacious duplex and two-storey homes come with a generous sized, west-facing balcony. Secure basement parking is also available.
The Union Carriage Works was opened as a carriage and auto-car manufactory by James Walmsley in 1897 in Guildhall Street in Preston with “upwards of 100 carriages, the latest and lightest designs”.
He began his carriage-making business in Avenham Street in the 1840s. Success and the dawning of a new automotive era led the firm to open in a new, purpose-built carriage and auto-car works opposite the Garlick, Park & Sykes designed Conservative Club built in free neo-Elizabethan style.
In 1925, the Union Carriage Works was sold to the United Yeast Company, which serviced the brewing, baking and confectioner’s trades until the 1960s.

The Union Lofts are just a couple of minutes walk from Fishergate, Preston’s main retail street, recently transformed in a multi-million pound makeover and Winckley Square, which too has recently been restored.
Winckley is the area that links the city centre with Avenham and Miller Parks, and the River Ribble. It’s made up of a large elegant Georgian square (unusual if not unique in the North of England) and a network of ‘lanes’ one of which is Guildhall Street.
The neighbourhood has all the things you’d expect to find in a city Including fake Rolex centre location and some of the things you wouldn’t. Like Cardinal Newman College, the top performing sixth form college in the UK.

The lofts take advantage of the warehouse character of the existing building, exposing the old brick and upcycling the old floor and soffit boards.
The lofts are true lofts, exploiting the height of the existing roof with full width, clear span, timber, queen post trusses to make spacious front to back living, dining, kitchens.
Windows are triple glazed with timber inside and aluminium outside. Walls and roofs are insulated to exceed building regulations. Materials are recycled wherever possible. Wood for the balustrades is being sourced from parts of the demolished upper levels of the building, retaining the materials on-site.
